UN Sustainable Development Goals:

This project focuses upon the establishment of FSC certified plantations in the Western and Central provinces of Laos. Most of Laos' carbon emissions are released from forest degradation and deforestation. The Burapha Agroforestry Project works to mitigate these negative climate impacts and assist Laos in meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in line with the Paris Agreement.

Guided by the mitigation hierarchy, the project will, first and foremost, facilitate carbon removal from the atmosphere by increasing forest cover in the project areas, specifically on degraded lands previously converted for agriculture. Traditional swidden agricultural practises will be replaced by agroforestry methods including intercropping and proposed integrated cattle grazing. In this way, the project creates new employment opportunities for local people, providing an economic boost both locally and regionally. Designated conservation areas will protect the habitats of native ecosystems and safeguard the ecosystem services they provide.
